Beagley and JohnstonSMI’s Immediate Past President Ken Beagley, has recently been recognized by media outlets for his research on male koalas. This work is a collaboration between Dr. Beagley and Professor Steve Johnston at the University of Queensland. Dr. Beagley briefly explains their research, “We have found that male koalas, as many as 70% in our area, have Chlamydia infections of the testis and male reproductive tract and these infections adversely impact spermatogenesis, causing DNA damage to sperm that may impair male fertility. We are starting a vaccination program of male koalas to see if we can reverse the damage caused by Chlamydia infection in males and enhance fertility in wild koala populations.”
