Multiple DC subsets have been described and it remains challenging to align them across tissues and species to analyze their function in absence of macrophage contamination. In their paper titled “Unsupervised High-Dimensional Analysis Aligns Dendritic Cells across Tissues and Species”, the teams of Florent Ginhoux, Martin Guilliams, Bart Lambrecht and Bernard Malissen have joined forces and published a study describing a universal, high-throughput and standardized analysis of dendritic cell (DC) populations in mice, macaques and humans. This methodology should provide a useful framework to analyze the complexity of the DC compartment, paving the way towards the identification of the best DC subset(s) to target for specific therapeutic applications such as the development of next-generation vaccines.
