Per Brandtzaeg Distinguished Scientific Achievement Award

Established in 2005, this award honors outstanding members of the community of scientists in mucosal immunology. Its aim is to recognize the scientific achievements of those few individuals who have contributed to the field in a significant and important way over a long period of time and is presented at the biennial International Congress of Mucosal Immunology (ICMI). The award was named in 2017 to honor and commemorate the strong impact of Dr. Per Brandtzaeg's work on the field of mucosal immunology and leadership to the Society.

Award Criteria:

  • Any scientist with work in the mucosal immunology field (does not have to be a current SMI member)
  • Outstanding history of contributions to the science of mucosal immunology (publications, techniques, educational impact, mentorship)

Distinguished Service Award

Initiated in 2005, this award is presented biennially at the International Congress of Mucosal Immunology (ICMI) to honor a member of the Society who has exhibited great citizenship through service to the society in a volunteer capacity over an extended period of time.

Award Criteria:

  • Honors current Society member with strong history of volunteer leadership with SMI
  • Volunteer work could include: Current or past Board members, Committee members, Committee Chairs, or Journal editorial work

Brian Kelsall Medal

Initiated in 2022, this award is presented at the Board of Councilor's discretion to recognize service to the Society's journal, Mucosal Immunology, that goes above and beyond. This award was named at it's inception after its inaugural recipient, Brian Kelsall, MD, who served as Editor-in-Chief of Mucosal Immunology from the journal's inception through early 2021.

Award Criteria:

  • Honors current Society member with strong history of service to the journal, Mucosal Immunology

Young Investigator Award

The Young Investigator Award was established in 2017 to honor young investigators within 15 years of their postdoctoral experience who have made significant contributions to the field of mucosal immunology. This award is presented at the biennial International Congress of Mucosal Immunology and consists of travel support to ICMI along with complimentary registration(s).

Award Criteria:

  • Honors current Society member (with at least 1 full year of membership in the Society) within 15 years of their postdoctoral experience
  • Recognizes significant contributions to the field of mucosal immunology
