SMI Member Dana Philpott and colleagues find that the autophagy is protective in T-cell-mediated enteropathy. They showed that mice specifically deleted for Atg16l1 in intestinal epithelial cells had exacerbated intestinal damage and identified IFN-γ as the major instigator of crypt cell death through the activation of apoptosis.
